Every year we mark World AIDS Day across Anglo American, to raise awareness and celebrate the steps taken to diminish the impact of the disease. HIV/AIDS is a global epidemic. It impacts all our operations and the communities we work in. We believe it is our responsibility as a business, but also our social duty, to make sure that our employees and their families are healthy.

Reaching our goals

We have been working with UNAIDS to tackle HIV/AIDS in all our operations. Not only do we want to see our employees live healthy lives, but we want to see the end of HIV/AIDS as a major public health problem by 2030. Our commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS supports the UNAIDS 90-90-90 Target. So, by 2020:

  • 90% of our employees in high-prevalence countries will know their status
  • 90% of those with an HIV/AIDS positive diagnosis will be receiving immediate sustained anti-retroviral therapy (ART)
  • 90% of those HIV positive employees who are receiving ART will have viral suppression.

We are well on our way to achieving this target. At present, 83% of our employees in high prevalence countries know their status and more than 84% of those with an HIV/AIDS diagnosis are receiving sustained anti-retroviral treatment. This early and sustained treatment translates into a more than tenfold decrease in the number of people who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDs-related illnesses in the last four years.

Working in partnership

Last year, 43,568 employees were tested for HIV and we are committed to seeing an increase in this number. This year, our African business units are offering colleagues the chance to have an on-site test on World AIDS Day. In London, we are partnering with the Terrence Higgins Trust to provide on-site testing or a kit and guidance for a home test. The Trust does incredible work around the world to make sure that everyone has access to testing and treatment for HIV. Our work with them will make sure that we all know our status.

Tackling co-infection

In South Africa, the risk of co-infection of Tuberculosis (TB) with HIV is around 60%. For that reason, we have strengthened the prevention, rapid diagnosis, and adequate treatment of TB. The number of new cases of TB has diminished over the last three years. Overall, the level of incidence in our company is lower than the figures on new cases in the general population.

Continuing the fight

We are proud of the leadership we have shown in addressing HIV/AIDS. We value our people, and it is our social responsibility to make sure that they are healthy and have access to basic health care. Our work will not be complete until HIV/AIDS is no longer a public health problem. Our commitment to ridding our communities of this disease is unwavering and we will work with partners across the globe to continue this work.
