This year’s Human Rights Day (10 December) is a special one as it marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations General Assembly in Paris in 1948.

The document set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and, over the last seven decades, it has been translated into more than 500 languages.

At Anglo American, we’ve always been committed to the highest standards of working, especially when it comes to human rights. This is demonstrated in our day-to-day activities which are underpinned by our Code of Conduct and our Responsible Sourcing Standard, as well as our approach to engagement with governments and our communities.

Marking 70 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

But the external human rights environment is dynamic; it’s always changing, as are society’s expectations of us.

We need to make sure that our approach to human rights is current and relevant and that we are always engaging with the right people, so that we can improve and meet those expectations.

To get us into the right shape to do all that, over the last 12 months, we’ve been working with our businesses and operations around the world, as well as our external partners, to really understand what best practice looks like.

That work also helped us to identify those areas that need some work, and where we may be vulnerable.

In the coming year, we will be putting everything that we’ve learnt in 2018 to good use, as we work on our new Human Rights Strategy, which we plan to launch in 2019.
