To mark International Youth Day, we would like to turn the spotlight on our community programmes that help younger generations to build strong foundations for their future.

Anglo American’s youth development programmes continue to support public schools and youth organisations in communities where we operate, with new long-term partnerships on the horizon.

South Africa

In South Africa, our education programme spans 109 schools and supports over 73,000 students and 2,000 teachers to help them build, develop and strengthen their skills across the Limpopo, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga region. Through this programme, we seek to partner with various organisations who want to make a difference and drive impact in these communities.

One of our most recent contributions and support was from Accenture, through our global partnership with them. Accenture has donated school furniture and 65 desktop computers to help improve the educational environment and learning support for these students. We are working with Accenture to get the furniture delivered to schools, and ICT labs to setup the desktops. We will also provide training on how to use the equipment.

Chile

The EmpleaT programme’s goal is to increase employability for women and men through personal effectiveness development and tools, creating local demand for jobs beyond mining, via connections with labour market ecosystem institutions in Chile. The six-year programme, funded by Anglo American, started in 2017 in collaboration with IDB LAB – the innovation laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group and TechnoServe – a non-profit organisation, within the Beyond Extraction Regional Project.

Apart from facilitating the integration of young people into the labour market by providing them with technical tools, EmpleaT programme also helps them develop their socio-emotional skills so that they can confidently face hiring processes and their integration into companies in the territory. By gaining access to formal employment, young people can increase their financial status and have social security benefits such as health and retirement, which will improve their own and their families’ lives.

International Literacy Day 2021

To date, among those of 25-35 years old, 438 participants have been trained via this programme gaining technical job skills, 68% of which found a job within 90 days of graduation.

Among, 18-25 years old, 160 participants were trained in technical job skills and 66% of all participants found a job within 101 days of graduation.

Anglo American’s Education and Skills programmes currently support 200 schools and around 200,000 students. The vision for the next two years to increase the number to 500 schools and over 500,000 students.
