Commenting on the achievement, Group Head of Social Impact at Anglo American, Tricia Wilhelm, said:
“As a company whose decisions and actions impact a wide group of stakeholders which includes our employees and their families, our host communities, workers in our value chains and our customers – we have an important responsibility to contribute towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We are proud to be ranked in the top five companies in the World Benchmarking Alliance’s Social Benchmark 2024 for our work to respect human rights, provide and promote decent work, and to conduct our business ethically.
“This achievement demonstrates our commitment to behaving ethically and to consistently showing care and respect for colleagues, communities and the environment in which we operate, aligned with our work of being a Trusted Corporate Leader.”
Founded in 2018, the WBA is a non-profit organisation holding the world’s most influential companies accountable for their part in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It does this by publishing free and publicly available benchmarks on their performance and showing what good corporate practice looks like.
This is the first year that the WBA has published their Social Benchmark. The aim of the Benchmark is to examine whether companies are fulfilling societal expectations to foster a more equal and inclusive world. The methodology consists of three measurement areas: the responsibility of companies to respect human rights, their role in providing and promoting decent work, and their ethical conduct in areas like lobbying and tax. Respect for human rights underpins both decent work and ethical conduct.
At Anglo American, human rights are a critical aspect in every area of our business. This commitment is expressed through our being a signatory to the UN Global Compact and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. We work with governments at all levels and other authorities to ensure human rights are understood and protected – for our workforce, the communities around our operations, and across our entire value chain.
Aligned to our work as a Trusted Corporate Leader, we are improving accountability by transforming the relationship between our mining operations and wider society. We are part of an ethical value chain and provide products to our customers that are sourced responsibly, meeting the highest ethical and sustainability standards.
