Over the past months, the role that parents and carers have played in creating safe family environments has been crucial in our fight against the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Today, we at Anglo American, want to celebrate that role by marking ‘Global Day of Parents’ - a day that was first designated by The United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to acknowledge parents’ “selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship”.

We know that short and long-term support for employees who are parents and carers is vital to mental and physical wellbeing and creating an environment where everyone of us can reach their full potential at work.

World AIDS Day 2020

At Anglo American, as part of the support we provide to our employees who are parents and carers, we have created EveryOneIn campaign that asks colleagues to help us to build a bigger picture of who works for us by sharing their diversity characteristics– one of which is carer status. We also provide employees with free licences for the Headspace mindfulness and meditation app, which includes sessions for children.

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provides a free confidential guidance and support service on a range of everyday matters, including family care and housing. In the UK, our You Care colleague network supports colleagues to balance caring responsibilities with career development opportunities.

We are also proud to announce that last week in the UK we were named as winners of the Best for Carers and Eldercare award – sponsored by the Crown Prosecution Service - by work-life balance charity Working Families, as part of the 2021 Best Practice Awards. The awards celebrate employers whose stand-out cultures and working practices are leading the way in flexible and employee-friendly workplaces.

We know that being a primary care-giver during a global health crisis has been extraordinarily tough over the past months. We also know that care-givers are likely to continue to feel the pressure for a while to come and its right to acknowledge their selfless contribution by marking Global Day of Parents. But we also will continue to work to put in place policies and interventions that support colleagues who are caring for family members and at the same time, continuing with their careers
