Our Ambassadors for Good in the UK attended a project kick-off event at our London HQ this week.

Ambassadors for Good (AfG) is our employee volunteering programme. It gives Anglo American and De Beers Group employees the chance to use their skills to help social projects in their communities, backed by funding from the Anglo American Foundation.

The launch event on 4 September saw over 20 ambassadors and their partner organisations come together to find out more about what to expect from the programme and get ready to begin implementing their projects.

Introducing the event, Group Head of Social Performance and Engagement Jon Samuel explained the link between AfG and the Anglo American Sustainable Mining Plan.

All of the successful project applications relate in one way or another to the Plan’s nine stretch goals, and will help us to deliver on our Purpose

“I’m impressed by the diversity and quality of this year’s projects, and I know they will all have a significant, positive impact on our local communities.”

Plans for 2020

This year in the UK, there are 41 employees supporting 16 projects ranging from spreading knowledge of the rule of law in underserved communities and legal ecosystems, to building awareness of LGBT youth services by developing a digital marketing strategy.

Half of the UK ambassadors took part in AfG last year.

Diego Henriques, an AfG alumni and one of the ambassadors featured in this year’s communications campaign, shared his experience of the programme.

He explained why he’s continuing his AfG project with Migrant Leaders, supporting young people who are first, second and third generation migrants, often from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“AfG appeals to me because it’s not just about giving money, but having the chance to participate in a meaningful way to make a real difference,” he said.

“This is the second year of our partnership with Migrant Leaders, and it’s very exciting. We have a clear plan to help even more talented young people aim high and achieve their full potential.”
