Anglo American wins prestigious exploration award for Los Sulfatos copper discovery

Anglo American’s exploration team has been selected to receive the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) prestigious Thayer Lindsley Award for the Los Sulfatos copper discovery in Chile. The Thayer Lindsley award “recognises an individual or team of explorationists credited with a recent significant mineral discovery or series of discoveries anywhere in the world”.

In July 2009, Anglo American announced the results of exploration drilling programmes which demonstrated the existence of a world class copper deposit at Los Sulfatos, with an Inferred Resource of 1.2 billion tonnes at 1.46% Cu and 0.02% Mo, containing an estimated 17.5 million tonnes of copper. The deposit is open in various directions and in terms of overall potential for the Los Sulfatos exploration target, the tonnage is expected to be between four and five billion tonnes at grades of between 0.8% Cu and 1.0% Cu. The Los Sulfatos porphyry copper and breccia complex is located approximately 6km south of Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine and some 50km to the north-east of Santiago in central Chile.

Graham Brown, Anglo American Group Head of Geosciences and Exploration, said: “I am very proud of the work we have done together on this project; it has been a great team achievement. Years of hard work, dedication and determination made this discovery possible.”

Brian Beamish, Anglo American Group Director of Mining and Technology, said: “PDAC is a highly respected association and to receive this award, in recognition of our discovery success, serves to reaffirm Anglo American’s expertise and leadership in the field of exploration. Exploration and the discovery of new deposits like Los Sulfatos provide options for growth and are key to our future business success. This is a well deserved honour for the team.”
