About Anglo American’s winning projects:
The Gypsum Housing Project uses the 200 tonnes of raw gypsum produced every day as a by-product at Thermal Coal’s eMalahleni Water Reclamation Plant, as a raw material in the construction of homes. This low-cost, high-quality building material has been used to build 66three-bedroom units with more units planned. This has enabled our employees to move away from mine villages and into affordable homes to enjoy long-term home ownership. The Gypsum Housing project is part of our overall aim to make the water reclamation plant a zero-waste facility. The plant desalinates 25 million litres of mine water per day, meeting 20% of the eMalahleni municipalities’ water needs and providing 80,000 people with safe and reliable drinking water.
The John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) Rural Research Project focuses on identifying, evaluating and locating an appropriate socio-economic framework for the communities spanning the JTG District Municipality, Kgatelopele Local Municipality and the Tsantsabane Local Municipality. This targeted, year-long intervention, designed and implemented in 2009, was part of Kumba Iron Ore’s commitment to increase its knowledge and capacity in relation to driving effective change in the region for years to come. The research was co-funded by BHP Billiton and Assmang operations in the JTG area.
The Ulysses Gogi Modise Wellness Clinic at Sishen Mine in the Northern Cape provides mine workers, contractors and the broader Sishen and Kathu communities, with a comprehensive care, management and treatment plan for HIV/AIDS and associated diseases. It also provides screening for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, TB and cancer and provides general health and nutritional education as part of its holistic approach to community wellness. Built in 2007, the clinic is operated in partnership with South Africa’s Northern Cape Department of Health and the Gamagara local municipality.
Anglo American’s Thermal Coal HIV/AIDS Workplace Programme forms part of the Group’s overall HIV/AIDS programme, considered to be the largest HIV/AIDS workplace prevention, counseling, testing and treatment programme in the world. Thermal Coal’s programme was recognised internationally in 2009 by the United Nations Global Compact for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.
Anglo American’s Science, Career Guidance and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Resources Centre is a R19 million facility, located in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga, providing interactive science, career guidance and ICT resource facilities for educators and learners throughout the Nkangala district.
