Anglo American is saddened to hear the news that Professor Karel van Miert, a Director of the Board since 2002, passed away on June 22.
Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Chairman of Anglo American plc, said:
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Karel’s death. Fellow Board members will miss his quiet but persistent approach to issues, and his sense of humour. We have lost a good friend and have sent our condolences to his wife Carla and the family.
Karel’s long experience first as a member of the European Parliament and then for ten years as a member of the European Commission meant he brought tremendous knowledge of government, regulatory and competition issues that Anglo American needs to address in our business. He also took a lively interest in all Board matters and was involved in the audit, nomination and safety and sustainable development committees, bringing the experience of the many other major boards on which he served. He will be sorely missed.”
