Anglo American announces Group Head of Human Resources

Anglo American is pleased to announce the appointment of Mervyn Walker to the role of Group Head of Human Resources, replacing Russell King, who recently became the Group's Chief Strategy Officer.

Mervyn will join Anglo American from Mondi, where he is currently Group Human Resources and Legal Director, responsible for the Group's human resources, corporate communications, safety, sustainable development, legal and company secretarial matters. He is also Non-executive Chairman of Amec plc's UK pension schemes.

Commenting on the appointment, Cynthia Carroll, CEO of Anglo American, said: “I am delighted that Mervyn will be joining Anglo at this important point in the development of our Human Resources strategy and am confident that he will build upon the tremendous foundation laid down by Russell and take Anglo's people agenda forward with great success.”

Mervyn's appointment will take effect from 1 September 2008.

Mervyn Walker
Prior to joining Mondi in 2006, Mervyn spent 19 years at British Airways (BA), 14 of which were spent as a senior director. During his time at BA, he worked across the business in roles that included Legal Director, Director of Purchasing, Director for People and Director of UK Airports. As Director for People, Mervyn was charged with BA's global HR strategy and implementation, including all recruitment, training, industrial relations and reward and recognition. In this role he successfully led the HR department through a six-year period of major change.
