Anglo American South Africa appoints CEO and COO

Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited ("Anglo American South Africa") is pleased to announce the appointment of Lazarus Zim as Chief Executive Officer with effect from 1 February 2005.

He will also be appointed to the Executive Committee of Anglo American plc. Tony Trahar, Chief Executive of Anglo American plc, will remain Chairman of Anglo American South Africa.

Lazarus Zim said, "This appointment to lead Anglo American South Africa is an extraordinary opportunity, particularly in view of the fact that the Anglo American group has invested R100 billion in South Africa over the last five years and is presently undertaking new projects valued at R24 billion in South Africa."

As Chief Executive of Anglo American South Africa, Lazarus will also chair the Transformation Committee whose primary role is to provide increased focus on the transformation of Anglo American's South African businesses and to ensure the strategic alignment of country issues and the appropriate positioning of Anglo American South Africa as a major transformational player and investor in the South African economy.

Lazarus Zim holds a number of other important directorships including AngloGold Ashanti, Anglo American Platinum, Kumba Resources and Telkom. He is also a member of the Chamber of Mines Executive Council, the Advisory Working Group in the Ministry for Provincial and Local Government and the Big Business Working Group.

Godfrey Gomwe, presently Chief Strategy Officer of Anglo American South Africa is appointed Chief Operating Officer of Anglo American South Africa. He will be responsible for supporting Lazarus Zim in the administration of the company and in the implementation of the transformation strategy. Godfrey will remain Chairman of Anglo American Zimbabwe, Anglo Zimele, Mondi South Africa and a member of various operating boards and executive committees.
