Securing a scarce resource
Water is an increasingly scarce resource. Its management and conservation represent one of the key sustainability challenges facing Anglo American now and in the coming decades. That’s why the work of Vinesh Dilsook is proving so important in the way we do business around the world.
Vinesh Dilsook piloted and trialled the Group’s Water Efficiency Target Tool.
A water specialist with a postgraduate degree in water utilisation, Vinesh has a deep understanding of water and how to conserve it. During the three years he has spent with Platinum’s environmental management team leading the water initiative, his knowledge and passion has proved an outstanding asset to the company.
One major achievement has been the establishment of the framework for the Group’s Water Efficiency Target Tool (WETT), which Vinesh piloted and trialled. WETT is a water balance tool that measures the company’s current water consumption against its future business production plan, allowing us to benchmark ourselves for water efficiency, set targets for the future and measure our progress towards those targets.
Vinesh also set up the water target setting process for Platinum – an initiative that has led to more efficient water management, better tracking and reporting; increased awareness of water conservation and closer alignment with the Group’s water strategy. Since setting up the process, Platinum’s water consumption has dropped by 16%.
One of the keys to Vinesh’s success has been communication – in particular, his establishment of cross-functional water committees to raise awareness and create a consistent approach to water management across every department. Historically, different departments had tended to work in silos, but because of the committees, water has become an important issue for everyone in the business.
