Mantos Blancos wins top national safety prize

Anglo American's Mantos Blancos copper mine in Chile has been named the operation with the best safety performance in 2009 by the country's National Geology and Mining Survey (SERNAGEOMIN)

The annual award, the most important given by SERNAGEOMIN, is given to a company in the mining or industrial sector that has fully met all the survey's criteria of operating excellence with regard to employees' health and safety.

Sergio Parada, General Manager of Mantos Blancos, said the award was recognition for the commitment and leadership of its employees. "This award is an achievement by everyone and is an incentive to make an even greater effort to maintain and improve our safety and occupational health record," said Sergio.

"We have made a great deal of progress and the number of lost-time injuries has decreased significantly. The long-term challenge is to continue making progress every day and to keep safety at the heart of our working culture."
