24/7 safety monitoring
At the launch of the safety system, the Mayor of Lo Barnechea, Felipe Guevara, said: "Throughout the year, tourists, workers, athletes and neighbours, drive along the G-21. Today, thanks to the project developed jointly with Anglo American, the road now has a new security system, which allows a prompt reaction of our teams to any incident. This is a complex route, which boasts high traffic in this winter season, where athletes, tourists and neighbours live together. This new system will be tremendously beneficial for all those who use it."
Felipe Purcell, Head of Corporate Affairs for Anglo American in Chile, said: "Safety is one of the fundamental values for Anglo American and for this reason we have been working for many years to improve the conditions of the G-21 route, which is a road shared by both Farellones community members, tourists and workers from our Los Bronces mine. The manifestation of this commitment is a great progression of the work that we have carried out together with the municipality and the community, with the end goal of having a more secure and controlled road for the benefit of all its users."
The G-21 route now features seven route visualization cameras; SOS communication posts for those needing assistance; a vehicle and speed control system; a communications platform; and a 24 hour control room. In total, the system cost 420 million pesos [approximately US $625,000].
People are our business, and we’ve no doubt about our first priority: doing everything we can to keep them and our community members safe and well.
