FAQs

Question: How long should a cedar roof last?

Answer: With a good product, and proper installation, a cedar roof should last between 20 and 30 years. Keeping the roof clear of debris will add years to it's life and serviceability. In heavily treed areas or areas with high humidity, factory preservation CCA Treatment is recommended.

Question: How are cedar roofs maintained?

Answer: Keep the roof clear of moss and debris build-up. Sweep off accumulations of debris periodically. Individual spaces between shakes can be scraped out with a flathead screwdriver. Spray the roof off with a hose nozzle and you're done!

Question: Shake or Shingles, what's the difference?

Answer: Shakes have a natural split surface, and a sawn backside. They produce a rustic profile. Shingles are sawn on both sides and produce a smooth finished look. The Tapersawn Shake is really a thick shingle applied with the exposure and felt underlay of the shake. (See our Product Description section for more details)

Question: Why are cedar shakes and shingles imitated?

Answer: The "Cedar Look" has been attempted with products like asphalt, fiberglass, cement and even sawdust! Man-made materials all have their drawbacks such as weak wind resistance, de-lamination, fading, heavy weight, and poor insulating values. Man-made materials pollute during production and disposal. Cedar, on the other hand, outperforms and outlasts in all categories! We're glad for the flattery!!
