Indexes

Anglo American voluntarily contributes to a number of sustainability indices that benchmark and track the performance of the most socially responsible companies. Such indices provide investors with an independent evaluation of our approach to sustainable development, and encourage transparent disclosure of non-financial information within our industry.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) launched in 1999 and were the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Based on the cooperation of Dow Jones Indexes, STOXX Limited and Sustainable Asset Management they provide asset managers with reliable and objective benchmarks to manage sustainability portfolios.

Increasingly, investors are diversifying their portfolios by investing in companies that set industry-wide best practices with regard to sustainability. The DJSI provides a bridge between companies implementing sustainability principles and investors wishing to profit from their superior performance and favourable risk/return profiles.

Anglo American and the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

Anglo American has been part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes since 2003 and maintained its position on the Index since then. During 2010, in recognition of its performance against key sustainability criteria, Anglo American was awarded ‘Gold Class’ status in the DJSI Sustainability Yearbook – one of only three mining companies to achieve this.

Only 10% of the 2,500 companies invited to participate in the annual survey are selected to feature in the index. The assessment, which is assured by an external auditor, covers economic, environmental and social performance and includes a review of policies and performance in corporate governance, risk management, climate change, energy consumption, health and safety, supply chain standards and workplace relations among others.
