Diversity and transformation

Regardless of ethnicity, gender or physical ability, we aim to recruit the best people in the industry.

As a global business, Anglo American boasts and international and diverse workforce

As a global business with operations all over the world, Anglo American boasts an international and diverse workforce. As our businesses have grown there has been an understandable need to increase and broaden our talent pool, and we have supported that requirement by employing people from the communities and countries where we operate.

It is an approach that has spawned success – helping individuals, communities and countries to develop and prosper, while providing our businesses and operations with local expertise and the ability to grow organically.

In South Africa – where we are one of the country’s largest private sector employers – we continue to make good progress in relation to transformation. In 2010, the number of managers who were from ‘historically disadvantaged South African’ (HDSA) communities increased to 46% and makes us well placed to achieve the targets set out in the government’s Mining Charter by 2014.

In the Group as a whole, the number of women in management rose to 21% in 2010 – a figure which, of course, includes our Chief Executive, Cynthia Carroll – while the overall proportion of women in the workforce continued to rise, increasing to 14%.

The mining industry offers a broad spectrum of roles and responsibilities, and requires a talent network to match. We recognise that to meet this demand we must be as open and inclusive as possible, identifying those individuals who will best match our needs and demonstrate the ability to put our values and strategy into action.
