Environment
Situated on land designated by the State of Alaska for mineral resource development, the Pebble Project is in an area where strong environmental stewardship is of the utmost importance.
Anglo American has significant experience of operating responsibly in many environmentally sensitive locations
Anglo American and Pebble fully understand the significance of Alaska’s land, water and natural resources, as well as the state’s long and proud heritage of responsible resource development. These are circumstances in which Anglo American has a great deal of experience, having operated responsibly in many environmentally sensitive locations all around the globe.
Over the past six years, the Pebble Partnership has invested more than US$130 million on environmental and socio-economic studies, as it compiles one of the most comprehensive pre-development environmental databases in Alaska’s history. During this work, the Partnership has remained committed to transparency and continued to release the data to the public. For additional public scrutiny, the project is also working with the Keystone Center to facilitate an independent fact-based dialogue process.
To meet the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, the partnership is working with state and national agencies and local communities to ensure it produces the most environmentally responsible project plan possible.
At Anglo American, we believe that the policies and procedures we have developed and implemented at our operations around the world will ensure we meet our key environmental objective: to minimise any impact to the local environment by designing, operating and closing all of our operations in an environmentally responsible manner.
