Community

The communities within the Bristol Bay region are integral to the development of the Pebble Project.

Community engagement in PeruAn example of some of the community work carried out by Anglo American in Peru

Anglo American is recognised for its enterprise development schemes and community engagement initiatives. Programmes such as Zimele in South Africa and Emerge in Chile have made a real and lasting economic difference to the communities involved. The Anglo American Group Foundation and the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund are just two of the ways we provide social investment in areas such as health, education, arts and culture and the environment.

It is our objective to develop similar relationships and initiatives in Alaska, in keeping with the Pebble Partnership’s development principles.

Through continuous dialogue, local meetings and tours of the region, the Pebble Partnership is working closely with communities to maximise the benefits at every phase of project development, while also addressing local issues and concerns. Providing opportunities to raise questions and generate debate plays a vital part in creating awareness about the project and building trust among all parties.

An independent non-profit organisation, the Keystone Center, has agreed to work with the Pebble Partnership to develop these various channels of interaction. The ‘Keystone process’ will include independent science panels, joint fact-finding and other features to engage all community members in decisions made as the project advances.

The Pebble Partnership has also established the Pebble Fund a five-year, US$5 million commitment to support community-led initiatives that enhance the health of Bristol Bay fisheries and contribute to a sustainable economic future in southwest Alaska. To date, two Pebble Fund grant cycles have been undertaken with US$2.4 million in grants being distributed to 64 non-profit recipients in the Bristol Bay region, leveraging over US$10 million in matching funds from foundations, NGOs and government.
