Overview
Our strategy for our nickel business is to find or acquire, develop and operate long-life, low-cost mines in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
Employees in the control room at Barro Alto, Brazil
Our nickel business comprises the wholly-owned Codemin and Barro Alto mines in Brazil and the Loma de Níquel mine, in which we hold a 91% interest, in Venezuela.
First metal from the Barro Alto operation was produced in March 2011. The operation has the potential to be one of the top five ferronickel operations in the world and its continued ramp-up is one of our key strategic goals. In total, 37.4 million man hours were expended on the Barro Alto project, which was completed without a single fatality.
The new nickel plant will have a competitive cost position and a new marketing strategy has been implemented to leverage Group expertise and take advantage of the increased production.
