Overview

Our metallurgical coal business is Australia's second largest producer of coal and its third largest global exporter of metallurgical coal.

Our strategy is to significantly increase the value of the business by optimising existing operations and develop new operations to supply high margin export metallurgical coal.

Our metallurgical coal operations are based on the east coast of Australia and in Canada at well-established locations with direct access to rail and port facilities.

We operate six mines in Australia - one wholly-owned and five mines in which we have a controlling interest. Five of the mines – Moranbah North, Capcoal, Foxleigh, Dawson and Callide – are in Queensland. Drayton is in the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

In 2011, Metallurgical Coal’s mines produced an attributable 14.2 Mt of metallurgical coal, all for export, and 13.4 Mt of thermal coal, of which 46% was exported.

Our coal resource base totals some 3.6 billion tonnes of coal which includes high quality greenfields metallurgical coal reserves.

Clean coal technologies

We aim to be an industry leader in the pursuit of cleaner coal solutions for the world's energy needs and we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions by supporting world-leading technology.

Our metallurgical coal business has become a cornerstone investor in Australian-based MBD Energy, which is looking to begin trials of a leading-edge carbon capture and conversion technology, using algal synthesisers at three of Australia's biggest greenhouse gas emitting, coal-fired power plants.

Canada

Peace River Coal is a wholly owned open cut operation in western Canada. Currently the Trend mine in British Columbia is operational with significant growth opportunities being explored for the complex.
